I will say, that what they did after 1988 is up for debate, but their first four albums are essential thrash. They set the standard for everyone else to try and live up to.

I'm a fanboy for speaking the truth apparently. Metallica belongs on any list of top thrash bands, period. They expanded the horizons for what a thrash band could be while the rest stuck to their simple formulas. Name another thrash band in 1984 that was writing 8 or 9 minute instrumentals with the dynamics of Call of Ktulu or gasp, a "ballad," or let their bass player play lead. Metallica set the standard for what a thrash band should be and inspired countless metal musicians. Anyone who tries to deny this is a fuckwit.
