Aus der Zusammenarbeit des "Studio-Gottes" Geoff Barrow und der Sängerin Beth Gibbons entstand Dummy -- zur selben Zeit wie ein kurzer Film Noir mit dem Titel To Kill A Dead Man. Die selbe düstere, qualvolle und wild-melodramatische Stimmung durchdringt auch dieses Album. "Sour Times" (der Hit in dem Gibbons wieder und wieder "nobody loves me, it`s true" weint) und das noch gespenstischere "Glory Box" bilden die Stützen dieses Albums und bestimmen seinen Sound. Düstere Klangbilder erinnern an alte Soul- und Filmmusik, dazu entmenschlichtes, hohes Piepen und eine Beth Gibbons, die schmachtend einen Gefühlsausbruch nach dem anderen erleidet. Dazu das stete Pulsieren von Bass und Beats. Dieses langsame Stoßen und Knarzen ist ein Stilmittel, das seinen Ursprung in der Szene von Bristol hat.
